Kathak is one of the eight forms of classical dance from India. Kathak comes from the sanskrit word "katha" which means story. A Kathak dancer, or kathakar, means storyteller. Kathak dancers perform to tell stories using their hands, expressions, and feet that match the beat of a pakhavaj, tabla, or other types of percussion instruments. Kathak a classical form of Indian dance, it has different categories, or gharanas, each with a different focus/influence: - Benaras - focuses on facial expressions telling the story of Hindu gods - Jaipuri - focuses heavily on foot work matching the power of the percussion - Lucknow - focuses on facial expressions with instrumental, featuring Persian and Mughul influence Nita Trivedi has been dancing since the day she could walk. She has a background in Jazz and Ballet, but focused on Indian styles over the years. She has taught Bollywood Dancing all throughout Rhode Island for over 14 years, and now is bringing the classical form of Kathak to the community. Nita has been studying Kathak under Anindita Anaam who has trained under legendary gurus Pandit Rajendra Gangani (Jaipuri) and Pandit Jai Kishan Maharaj (Lucknow). Now Nita is ready to bring Kathak to Rhode Island. Take a class with her, and see what Kathak is all about. All bodies and experience levels are welcome.
